A New Theory on the Global War on Terrorism

Posted:2019-01-29

As part of our efforts to promote current research on international terrorist groups and their activities, in early 2018, the SIAS planned and launched a new book series: Global Counter Terrorism Studies. The first volume in this series, A New Theory on the Global War on Terrorism, authored by Wang Zhen, Researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), was recently published by Current Affairs Press.

The main argument of the new book is that the global war on terrorism following the  9/11 attacks has not achieved its goals, instead, transnational terrorist groups have expanded their capability and scope to operate. The book deals with three critical questions: where do transnational terrorists come from? Why has the global war on terrorism following the 9/11 attacks failed to deliver results? And where is it heading? In this book the author examines the global war on terrorism and transnational jihad, the predicament and roots of the global counter-terrorism war, as well as its transformation and implications for China. While using a large sum of recently declassified archives and documents on American diplomacy and national security strategy, the author approaches global war on counter terrorism from a Chinese perspective, and seeks to integrate macro strategy with micro issues in his discussion of counter terrorism.
