The US Policy in the South China Sea: Target and Strategy

(By Shi Yongming)

Abstract: The United States once again takes an active involvement in the South China Sea disputes by calling for a freeze on construction activities in this area. Although, the United States is an outsider of the South China Sea area, it is a main factor in the emergence and development of the disputes. After the Second World War, based on the theory of hegemony geopolitics, the US carried out hegemony strategy in the west Pacific region, and put the South China Sea in its sphere of influence. This is the profound reason of US involvement in the disputes in South China Sea. When Obama was the power, for maintaining the so-called “US leadership”, US began to use the South China Sea as a tool. The US not only defended its interests in the South China Sea, but also made use of the dispute to achieve the purpose of leading the changing direction of regional order. So, in South China Sea, China not only needs to protect its sovereignty interest, but also needs to pay attention to the US hegemony strategy.
