‘Take Care of Our Own Children’ — Missionaries and Establishment of Shanghai American School ( 1896-1912)

(By He Fangyu)

Abstract: Shanghai American School (SAS), the first American school in east and mid-China, was set up on September 17, 1912. The establishment of SAS, which is considered to be an important symbol of Sino-American friendship, witnesses the efforts of American missionaries in China for years. In 1980, the school was recovered and has now developed into the largest international school in China. Study on relevant issues of SAS will help make up for the disadvantages of the education for children of American missionaries. In the meantime, we can know something about the social history of Shanghai and history of Christianity.
