The Formation of the Shanghai American Community (1919-1925)

(By He Zhenmo, translated by Huang Jianmei, Zhang Xiaochuan, and edited by Yu Manyi)

Abstract: The thesis describes the formation of the Shanghai American community after World War I and traces the relationships which emerged between Shanghai Americans and the Chinese bourgeoisie, particularly American-trained Chinese. Shanghai was one of the major destinations of the migration of thousands of Americans who went abroad to seek their fortunes during and after World War I. The growing numbers of Americans in Shanghai stimulated the formation of a separate national community, an American community distinct from the surrounding foreign enclave and defined by typically American institutions — church, school, and club, rather than by geographic proximity.
