Posted:2019-08-08

On July 8, 2019, SIAS invited a group of experts and scholars to a photo exhibition entitled “Trans-Pacific Exchange and Cooperation – Shanghai Commemorates the 40th Anniversary of China-US Diplomatic Relations”. Following the visit, SIAS hosted a seminar on China-US local exchanges and China-US relations at the Shanghai Municipal Archives on the Bund.

Experts and academics from local research institutions attended the meeting, including the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association (SPDA), the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Fudan University and the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). Those at the meeting shared their views on the positive roles of subnational exchanges in bilateral relations, as well as the challenges that lie ahead. Participants agreed that in view of tensions fuelled by the trade dispute and great power rivalry, local exchanges and cooperation should play a bigger part in revitalizing bilateral relations. They concluded that a concerted effort should be made to build Shanghai into a model platform and a window for China-US local exchanges.
